Success is more about mindset than luck. Sure we’ve all heard about the overnight success of a company, person, or even entertainer. What we don’t see, the countless hours of work put in before anyone paid any attention to them before they were successful. Here are six things successful people do that you can too.
Edison was asked how he felt failing to invent the light bulb 10,000 times. His response is something worth learning from as he is quoted as saying “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work“. Talk about Failing Forward.
The fact of the matter is simple. Successful people push, fight, bleed, sweat, and cry their way through whatever it takes. Luck is not the determining factor, rather hard work and determination make it appear as luck. Some call this hustle.
6 Things Successful People Do
Successful people don’t make excuses or pass blame. Here are five things you can do to be just like successful people.
One thing that successful people do is take responsibility. They did not get where they were going by passing the buck to someone else. If you want to build trust and influence (which you do in order to be successful), then you must be the responsible party.
If you ever participated in sports, you’ve most likely heard a coach yell hustle. I’m not talking about that type of hustle, I mean a full on sprint until you succeed and then keep going. I love Grant Cardone‘s The 10X Rule: The Only Difference in Success and Failure on the topic. Pickup a copy at Amazon.
Similar to hustle, dreaming has to be huge. I always joked that I was running for President in 2024. Sometime around my 18th birthday, a person I looked up to said to me, “you don’t think you can actually be President do you?”. Actually, I can. “If you’re dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough.”
Jon Acuff does a great job talking about going for your dream job but doing it responsibly in Quitter: Closing the Gap Between Your Day Job & Your Dream Job.
Focus and clarity are two closely related things that successful people are spectacular at. They set clear goals, hustle towards them, and make a plan to achieve. Their laser focus mixed with determination and hard work make goals appear clearer. Ask successful people about their habits and you will see trends that focus on the important and leave the others for waste. When you get to the top, truly successful people remember those who helped them along the way. Paying it forward is a desire to successful people who have no fear of losing out. They want to help others just like they were helped. No one became successful alone, if they tell you so, they’re lying. Develop others, just as you have been developed.
Perhaps the most important thing, read. Successful people on average read 22 books a year. These are development books that cover self-development, leadership, business, etc. If reading isn’t your strong suit, check out Audible. I can’t get enough of it.
